Can you believe we’re already halfway through the year? That’s crazy! I remember sitting in my bedroom, planning the year, and setting goals as if it’d happened just yesterday.

Goals… yeah. Do you remember yours?

I don’t.

Every year I set ambitious-as-heck goals, yet I do nothing to achieve them. Instead, I forget about them a few days later just to be reminded about them by every productivity (and not only) guru at the end of the year. Only then I realise how much time I’ve wasted, how little progress I’ve made towards bettering myself and creating the life I love, and it makes me feel truly bad about myself.

I know I can’t be the only one that’s experienced it, can I?!

That’s why today I want to share with you my process of the mid year reset I’ve been doing this year. There are tons of blog posts, Reels, and TikToks about it, yet I found nothing relatable enough to take meaningful action and actually try to do that famous mid year reset. Not to say that bucket lists and vision boards are bad or pointless – if they work for you, that’s awesome! But for me they’re clutter, something I’ll hide and never look at again, except for that one time in a couple of months when I find them and be disappointed I achieved nothing!

So, if you’ve been wondering how to do a life reset or you’ve been wanting to do it but strict plans and vision boards aren’t your jam – you’ve come to the right place.

But What Is A Mid Year Reset, Exactly?

A mid year reset is a perfect opportunity to pause and reflect on your life in order to see if you’re still on your way to create a life you love. It’s checking in with yourself to see if you’re on track to reach goals you set for yourself in January, reassessing your habits and routines to see if they’re still supporting you, and starting the second half of the year on a high note.

A mid year reset is a checkpoint to assess and realign the important areas of your life. It’s been a long time since you set your goals and made plans for the year, and now, your once unwavered motivation might’ve become (almost) not existent. Life happens, and we often fall off the track, forgetting about our intentions and goals in a process.

And mid year reset is here to anchor us to them yet again. To remind you what really matters and what steps you need to take in order to achieve it.

How To Do A Life Reset?

It seems as if everyone recommends taking the time out to do a mid year reset, clear your schedule for the day, sit alone in a quiet home for hours, and make your environment cosy, with dimmed lights, music in the background, and whatnot. For me, it’s completely unattainable. And pointless. Try doing it with kids, anyway!

I hate any routines and prefer to go with a flow, do whatever I feel like and however I feel like instead of sticking to a strict plan that “needs” to be executed on a specific day, otherwise I’ll be doomed.

If you’re just like me, forget about picking out a specific time and date. Instead, dedicate a random weekend or even a week around the middle of the year for a mid year reset. Take a notebook and journal whenever you feel like, revisit your goals in the middle of the day, just to come back to them in the evening. Who knows, maybe taking a break in between your “sessions” will help you come up with a plan or figure things out?

This year’s mid year reset happened naturally, to be honest. One day I just started deep cleaning my home, one area after another, often reaching places I’ve never touched since we moved in almost 2 years ago. Another time I bought a flat mop on a whim (what an amazing thing!) and started cleaning floors almost every day creating new habits supporting the vision of my ideal life. Somewhere in between my everyday tasks, I took some time to rethink direction I’ve been going in with my blog, social media, screen time, and everything related to them. I created new plans, set intentions instead of ambitious-as-heck goals, and started simplifying my life as I’ve been meaning to do since January.

I know my approach differs completely from what you might’ve seen on Instagram or YouTube, but it works perfectly fine for me, if not better. The result is the same – creating a life I love, one day at a time.

At that what matters the most.

Mid Year Reset In 5 Steps

Reflect On The Past Six Months

To kick-start your mid year reset, let’s start from the beginning. Take out all your notes from January, if you have any, and look back at the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Evaluate your progress and all your accomplishments so far.

Did you take any meaningful steps towards reaching your goals or your priorities shifted and those goals aren’t relevant anymore? Or maybe life happened, and you didn’t have time and/or energy to take action?

Do you know a wheel of life exercise? It could be a good idea to use it as a base for a quick life audit. It would allow you to identify any areas where you may have fallen short.

Take a moment to truly reflect on the past six months. Write down all good and bad, without judging yourself or throwing pity parties. It can be hard, but without knowing exactly what happened and why, you won’t be able to get back on track and avoid such situations in the future. Life is unpredictable, but you can control your response to the curveballs it throws at you.

Set New Goals For The Rest Of The Year

Once you know what your current situation is, think of all the things you still want to achieve. Double check if your “old” goals are still relevant, and scratch them and set completely new ones if not. Is there anything else you’d like to achieve this year? Anything to make this year (and your life overall) better?

If you did the wheel of life exercise, look at it and pick one to three categories that are the most important to you right now. Then, prioritise your goals based on that.

Once you have all your goals, don’t forget to break them down into smaller, manageable tasks. This is where most people fail, me included. Small tasks seem like a waste of time. Go big or go home, am I right?

The thing is, that it’s impossible to overhaul your entire life in a matter of days or weeks. By taking small steps, you set yourself up for success since it’s easier to achieve them and feel successful, and not get overwhelmed and fail again and again.

Tiny habits is an amazing book talking all about it. I’m about 1/3 in, but from what I can tell, the key principle behind the behaviour method is breaking any habit you want to implement into teeny tiny habits. For example, if you want to exercise, you can commit to doing a push-up while waiting for water to boil. Once you implement a new habit successfully, you can build on top of it or slowly expand it.

That saying, I need to confess to something. As I mentioned earlier, I set ambitious-as-heck goals at the beginning of the year. It’s what I have to do to create a life I love, isn’t it? In fact, it hasn’t worked well for me. Instead of having a solid plan to follow, I started feeling overwhelmed, missed a deadline or two, which made me feel like a failure and started slowly spiralling down into the abyss of self pity and depression.

That’s why I’ve been so patchy with blogging this year.

That’s also why I decided to forget about any long-term goals. Instead, I focused on creating my perfect life vision and things I need to do to achieve it.

For example, I want to be a successful blogger (and a business owner), but I need to write more for this to happen. So, one of my intentions is to write every day. The amount of words I write doesn’t matter, it’s taking action and following through that counts.

Make A Plan For Success

It doesn’t matter whether you structured your goals or set intentions – a plan can help you all the same.

Just think about the last time when you wanted to change something in your life. It might be a new habit you wanted to implement or a goal you wanted to reach. You might’ve instinctively created a plan and schedule it to track your progress or you might’ve decided that you’re going to take it day by day and simply wing it.

I usually fall into the second category. And, obviously, I end up overwhelmed, demotivated, and unable to tell if I made any progress towards the changes I wanted to make.

To avoid anything like it, create a simple plan. It doesn’t have to be detailed! Just think about the end goal, about the thing you want to accomplish, and then backtrack to where you’re now. Then write down steps you need to take to get where you want to be.

For example, if you want to homeschool your child, you might need to find a curriculum, schedule your days, create a routine of some sorts, and buy necessary props.

If you’re a blogger wanting to earn money, you might want to publish new posts regularly, find affiliate programs, and sign with an ad network. You might also want to create a writing routine and track your progress every day.

Or, you might want to run a marathon. Then, probably, you’ll need to figure out healthier food options, meal plan every Sunday, and create a sort of running routine.

You get the gist. Just remember one thing: whatever you do, keep it simple, stupid and reach those amazing goals of yours!

Embrace Self-Care And Well-Being

Self-care isn’t a privilege. It’s extremely important for your wellbeing and quality of life.

I know it might sound trivial or cringe, but self-care isn’t just expensive spas, weekend trips with your girlfriends, or solitude nature retreats. Self-care is more like getting eight hours of sleep, putting healthy boundaries in place, and finding small pockets of time during your busy day to pause and slow down.

Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally will make sure that you’re on top of your game because remember. You can’t pour from an empty glass, after all. Can you?

That’s why it’s important that you include self-care in your mid year reset. Spend Sunday offline, go to bed earlier, brain dump everything that’s been taking up your mind lately, meditate – whatever fills your cup best. It will help you clear your head and make better plans for the rest of the year. Who knows, maybe it will also inspire you to make time for self-care regularly?

Don’t Rely On Motivation Alone

Most of us treat 1st January as a magical date when we wake up in the morning with a clean slate, ready to overhaul our lives and become the best version of ourselves. You join a gym, start a business or side hustle, set plenty of goals, just to forget about it all a few weeks later.

Why? What happened in those first few weeks that our goals, plans, ambitions just vanished?

Your motivation ran out. You might’ve noticed that you won’t achieve your goals as easily as you thought you would. And, just like that, you’re done.

If you truly want to achieve your goals and change your life, you need to take meaningful action. You can’t rely on motivation alone and ditch your goals whenever it’s gone.

Doing a mid year reset is a very first step towards creating a life you love. You need to create new habits and routines supporting your vision. Make progress, little by little, to ensure long-lasting benefits and increasing your chance of success.

Because when motivation dwindles, your vision stays the same. And it’s the discipline and determination that will help you get to the finish line.
